| Amazon Leo will launch in the Philippines within the year, as per DICT. |
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has announced that Amazon Leo, a direct competitor to Starlink, is undergoing regulation processing and will launch in the Philippines within the year, following the Konektadong Pinoy Act.
The Konektadong Pinoy Law, officially known as “Open Access in Data Transmission Act, Konektadong Pinoy” was a bill proposed last year that lapsed into law, with the goal of making the internet more accessible to Filipinos nationwide, especially in remote areas where access is often challenging. The law also allows more foreign telco companies to enter the Philippines and thus eliminate the triopoly of PLDT, Globe, and DITO.
Similar to Starlink, Amazon Leo is a low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite service that connects users via a direct-to-device system. In line with this, the company has acquired Globalstar for approximately USD 11.6 billion. Globalstar is the company known for making Apple's emergency connectivity features a reality.
Because there is no official date yet of the launch, the Amazon Leo website shows a waitlist and three separate plans depending on the purpose. Three plans are featured. These include residential, business, and government plans.
