Apple announced that Tim Cook would be stepping down his role as CEO, with John Ternus as his replacement, effective September 1st.

Tim Cook joined Apple's ranks in 1998 under Steve Jobs' request. During this time, he started closing down local factories and opted for contract manufacturers to lower down costs and increase sales. This is proven to be effective, and to this day, Apple contracts companies like Foxconn in Taiwan to manufacture its iPhones based on their strict requirements. In 2011, Jobs assigned Cook to be CEO and Apple saw numerous changes to its culture and core business functions.

Under Cook, Apple leaned on a more collaborative and liberal style of leadership. The company also saw itself transitioning from a hardware-based company to a services-one. Apple also became the world's second largest tech company by revenue, only behind Amazon with a yearly revenue of around $108 billion in 2011 to $426 billion in 2025. Apple also saw a sharp increase in market capitalization, from $350 billion to $4 trillion.

Apple's services like Apple Music and Apple TV grew significantly as well, with total revenue of around $100 billion. It was also under Cook's leadership when the flat design aesthetic was introduced as part of iOS, starting with iOS 7, replacing the 3D glass-like style that iOS 6 had.

I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward,” said Ternus. “Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor. It has been a privilege to help shape the products and experiences that have changed so much of how we interact with the world and with one another. I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come, and I am so happy to know that the most talented people on earth are here at Apple, determined to be part of something bigger than any one of us. I am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century.

Who is John Ternus?

John Ternus is the current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple. Before he joined the company in 2001, he designed VR headsets at a research firm. In his first days at Apple, he was part of the product design team and was working on the Apple Cinema Display used on older Macs and MacBooks. He was then assigned as Senior VP of Hardware Engineering under Dan Riccio, retaining this role up until autumn this year.

He foresaw the launches of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max and the MacBook Neo. According to a press release, Ternus was crucial in the development of new iPad, AirPods, Apple Watch, and iPhone product lines.

As part of Ternus' transition as CEO, Johny Srouji is Apple's Chief Hardware Officer, effective immediately. In this role, he will lead Apple's engineering team, a role Ternus' once had, at least until he becomes CEO this September.
